Measuring Standby Current

If a vehicle shows signs of battery discharge, it is important to correctly identify the cause before replacing parts or changing the installation.

Understanding the expected power consumption of the CC-Link helps avoid unnecessary work, incorrect conclusions, and delays for the customer.

Start with standard VW battery checks

If a vehicle battery is discharged or lacks charge, the battery must first be checked and troubleshot according to Volkswagen Group guidelines.

This includes:

  • Battery health and age
  • Vehicle usage pattern
  • Other electrical consumers in the vehicle

Only after standard checks should the CC-Link be considered as a potential factor.

Expected power consumption of the CC-Link

The following values are within the range accepted by the vehicle manufacturer.

After ignition is switched off and the vehicle is closed and locked:

  • From 1 to 20 minutes: approximately 50 mA
  • After 20 minutes: approximately 25 mA

In addition:

The CC-Link periodically searches for GPS During these short intervals, current draw may briefly peak at around 100 mA.

This behaviour is expected and does not indicate a fault.

How to evaluate battery consumption correctly

Always evaluate average current consumption, not short peak values Peak values during GPS checks must not be used as the basis for conclusions All doors, windows, and the boot must be closed and locked during measurement

If the total average consumption of the vehicle remains above approximately 15 mA, the source of the discharge should be investigated further.

Measurement documentation requirements

Measurements must be documented using the tester protocol Screenshots or photos of measurement values are not accepted as valid documentation.

This ensures consistent and reliable evaluation.

If CC-Link is suspected as the cause

If, after completing the required checks and measurements, the CC-Link is still suspected to contribute to battery discharge:

  1. Collect the tester protocol containing the measured values
  2. Report the case through your local VW support or importer support channel
  3. The case will be reviewed and escalated to Connected Cars Support if required

If the required documentation is not provided within five working days, the case may be closed automatically.

Important to know

Replacing or changing the CC-Link unit does not resolve battery discharge issues CC-Link power consumption alone rarely causes battery drain.

Always complete full vehicle diagnostics before escalation.
