Service and oil change data is one of the most valuable inputs for proactive service. It helps your workshop contact customers at the right time, plan capacity, and increase customer retention by offering timely service before issues become critical.
Understanding how this data is handled also helps you explain to customers why some vehicles show different service information or why certain data may be missing.
Why service data can differ between vehicles
Service and oil change data is complex and varies between vehicles for several reasons:
- Each vehicle uses multiple control units that calculate service data differently
- Not all vehicles expose the same service data digitally
- Service interval logic has changed across models and model years
- Commercial vehicles often follow different service strategies than passenger cars
Because of this, not all vehicles can show the same level of detail in ConnectedWorkshop.
What service data is shown in ConnectedWorkshop
From Volkswagen Group vehicles, multiple service-related parameters are collected and converted into the following four data points where available:
- Kilometres to next oil change
- Days to next oil change
- Kilometres to next service
- Days to next service
These values reflect what is shown in the vehicle itself.
For older vehicles, typically model year 2013 and earlier, only oil change information is available. In these cases, service interval data may be limited.
Service interval types
Vehicles generally use one of two service interval types.
- Variable service, or
- Oil change intervals
Most modern vehicles use variable intervals. This means the remaining kilometres to service or oil change depend on driving behaviour such as:
- Short trips
- Frequent cold starts
- Heavy load or aggressive driving
The vehicle calculates this internally based on oil quality and usage patterns. This data is not recalculated by ConnectedWorkshop.
